The main onHit handler is registered with ignoreCancelled = true, so a cancelled damage event never reaches it and cannot report itself as the reason nothing was summoned. This MONITOR-priority handler sees cancelled events and closes that blind spot, which is the difference between "the listener never fired" and "a gate rejected".
